3 Popular Manila Restaurants With Healthy Menu Options

You have seen these restaurants all around Metro Manila, but did you know these home-grown casual dining restaurants from the Max’s Group are full of healthy choices? 

Max’s Restaurant, Yellow Cab Pizza and Pancake House offer different menus to fulfill your different cravings and fortunately there are plenty of healthy dishes to choose from on each menu. 

Here is a list of what’s good for you in these 3 popular restaurants.

1. Max’s Restaurant 

An all-time Filipino favorite, Max’s Restaurant has been delighting customers for over 60 years since it was founded by Maximo Jimenez and his niece Ruby Trota. They served their famous chicken to American Soldiers on the ground floor of their home and the popularity of their chicken spread. 

Unfortunately their famous chicken is not anywhere near being a healthy option, but don’t worry their menu has a lot to offer. 

If you are a vegetarian try their Veggie Lumpia Bites which are crunchy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and loaded with fresh vegetables. Their honey mustard sauce is the perfect compliment to this healthy appetizer.

Also their Sizzling Tofu is a must try! Think tasty, sizzling soft tofu glazed with a special sauce. We cannot have enough of this unique tofu dish.

Not to be missed are their different versions of Sinigang. This ubiquitous dish while often served in Filipino homes is more special in Max’s Restaurant. It must be because it is served in traditional palayok or clay pots, while the appetizing presentation gives this famous dish a special twist.

For fish lovers there is the Pinaputok na Tiyan ng Bangus. A feast for the eyes as the bangus belly is carefully cooked in a banana leaf and smothered with fresh tomatoes, garlic and onions on top. No oil is used here so the dish is guaranteed to be low in calories but full of flavor, perfect for the health-conscious customer!

2. Yellow Cab Pizza

Known for their New York style pizza, we were almost sure this restaurant is a US franchise. Low and behold it is an all-Filipino restaurant managed by the Max’s Group, Yellow Cab Pizza started in 2001 in Makati. 

According to Yellow Cab, their pizza is topped with a “generous serving of the freshest, highest-quality ingredients, and you get—simply put—great New York-style pizza.”

First on our list for healthy choices is the “Dear Darla” pizza, a novel presentation of the usual flat triangular pizza. This one is hand-rolled and paired with arugula and alfalfa sprouts. If you’re not a fan of vegetables, this is one sure way to make you eat vegetables and enjoy them. 

Going vegetarian never tasted this good. The light crunchy crust rolled and made perfect with these superfoods, nutrition-packed greens makes you crave for more.

 Another healthy option is the “Chelsea Artichoke” pizza. Artichoke is a very versatile food that protects against various forms of cancer, boosts immunity, provides fiber, and a whole lot more. But do note that this pizza does have a kick as it has a mild taste of vodka. 

3. Pancake House

Pancake House has been serving comfort food for the last 4 decades. In the beginning, memories of Pancake House evolved around good conversation amidst famous movie posters that adorn its walls while indulging in the best pancakes in town. These movie posters have long been taken down but the good conversations over pancakes still remains.

There are many comfort food items on the menu that deliver the same feel-good benefits as their pancakes but without the calories.

Take for example their “Spicy Chicken Fillet” with brown rice which is both tasty and comes with all the benefits of brown rice.  

A refreshing dish you can order as an appetizer or enjoy as your main course is their “Shrimp Mango Salad.”

The mixture of the shrimp and ripe mango is just the perfect blend. The salad dressing goes well with the shrimp and the mango to give you the perfect blend of sweet, tangy and spicy.
